There are two types of criminal lawyers – prosecutors and defense lawyers. The prosecutor’s job is to represent the government in criminal proceedings. If you are charged with a criminal offense, these are the lawyers that will try and put you in jail. The defense lawyers are the ones that will represent you throughout the criminal proceedings.
In the United States, a person who has been accused of a crime has the option of either hiring a lawyer or a court appointed attorney. It is everyone’s right to have lawyer represent them during the criminal process regardless of whether they can afford a lawyer or not.
The criminal justice system works on the basis that the accused is assumed innocent until proven guilty. It is the job of the prosecutor to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty. This is why it is important to obtain a defense lawyer that is highly qualified with a lot of experience to defend you.
There are many advantages in working for the state as a prosecutor, most notably the ability to get new lawyers much needed trial experience. Trail experience is the most important factor people use to gauge who they want to hire as their personal lawyer. In private firms, lawyers may have to wait years before getting significant trial experience. Working for the prosecutor’s office means immediate trail experience. They would generally start off with small misdemeanor cases and move on to more serious work.
There is a myth that the prosecutors’ salaries are low. This is not necessarily true. They do tend to get paid less than those working in private law firms, but experienced prosecutor’s pay can exceed $100,000. However, you cannot put a price on the trial experience you will get working in the prosecutor’s office.
