Creating a web site is one of the easiest ways to get information across to a wide target audience. If you are aiming for a professional web site, it is always better to register your own domain name rather than opt for a free web site that might not exist in a few months’ time. This way you can control the content of your web site, expand it when you need to, guarantee its longevity and ensure that it is listed in popular search engines.
There are two basic steps involved in creating a web site and getting it up and running. The first is to register a domain (or dot com) name, and the second is to sign up with a web host.
A domain name is the address of your site. For example: www.yoursite.com. Choosing a domain name is crucial, since the basic idea is to attract as much traffic to your web site as possible. Register your name with a company that offers the option of privacy and provides continuous customer support. Domain names can be registered for a year or more, and registrations could range from $16 a year to as little as $10 for 10 years.
Try not to register lengthy or complicated domain names that cannot be easily recalled. It’s a good idea to register multiple extensions to the same name (.com, .info, .org, etc.) to prevent others from copying or registering similar names. If you are going to rely on search engines for traffic, use major keywords in your domain name instead of your company name.
Once you’ve registered your domain name, choose a web host depending on the size and type of site you are planning to create, and transfer your domain name to it. A web host will provide you the necessary space to build your web pages, set up email accounts if required and make provisions for additional functionality such as order forms, chat rooms, etc. Once you’ve signed up with a web hosting company, you can start creating your web site. Many web hosts offer online tools for those unfamiliar with the HTML program required to write the pages. A hosting company will charge around $10 per month for an average web site.
Remember, a good web site must be simple to use and navigate. Opt for the services of a web design company if you want that magnetic quality that attracts viewers like bees to a honey pot!
