Dressing up in costumes and going from door-to-door trick-or-treating is the modern version of Halloween in the United States, adapted from the Irish and Scottish traditions of guising. Halloween was celebrated in Great Britain and Ireland by the pagan Celts as the Day of the Dead. The Celts wore masks to scare off the evil spirits that supposedly rose from the dead.
Vampires, ghosts and witches were the most popular, traditional costumes worn to trick the spirits of the night into believing that you were one of them. Today teenagers and adults often celebrate Halloween by holding costume parties or scaring people. Children dressed in costumes go from door-to-door to collect candy. Nowadays, costumes are based on different themes instead of the traditional horror theme. Dressing up as a personality from a TV show or movie is far more popular. Even donning the mask and appearance of a politician has become popular. George Bush and John Kerry were among the most popular costumes in 2004.
Choosing a costume can often be a difficult chore. Whether it is bought from a shop or homemade there are some points that should be kept in mind when wearing a costume. Considering that you may be wearing it for more than a couple of hours, the costume should be comfortable. Any ordinary outfit can become a great costume with a few extra accessories. Add lace, ribbons, buttons and glitter, and give your costume that extra touch. Leftover scraps of fabric, beads and feathers can be used as trim and create a one of a kind outfit. Stretch your imagination to its limit and make your costume stand out in the crowd.
