Companies that undertake any kind of building work are called as construction companies. Their work consists building of homes, factories, academic structures, museums, etc. and even engineering projects such as building highways, bridges and dams. Construction work is generally localized at a particular site; however, some construction companies manage huge projects that may be spread over a large area or even dispersed in various locations. Construction companies do not just look after new constructions; even repair and renovation work is included in their portfolios.
The total number of construction companies in the US runs into several thousands. Most companies specialize in their own province and only a handful of companies are spread throughout the country. In order to survive, each company must build up a reputation of trust and safety standards for their employees.
Before beginning a new job, a construction company has to enter into a contract with the landowner. Estimates are drawn and after the company receives its first installment, the work is begun. Construction companies are responsible for all the manpower and machine power used on the site. Most laborers are employed and paid by the company themselves. However some companies hire laborers and machines, especially for big projects. There are also construction companies that provide services of only supervisors and overseers and hire all labor from other companies. This is done through sub-contracting. Whether the labor is their own or hired, their payment and safety is the responsibility of the construction company. Laborers are protected through the guidelines laid down by the OSHA, which stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Construction companies ideally take all their payments in bulk; which includes material charges, labor charges, transportation charges, etc. There may be customization where, for example, the transportation charges or the labor charges may be paid by the contractor. In such cases, the construction companies seek payment only for the portion of the services they provide. A detailed contract explains the responsibilities of the company and its payments for the same.
The construction industry is a multi billion-dollar industry in the US. In the last year, the revenues of just the top 50 companies were over $1.5 billion. At any given moment, several of these companies are bringing to life mega projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
