A computer keyboard, just like a typewriter keyboard, performs the basic function of providing input to the central processing unit of the computer through the pressing of relevant keys.
In addition to this, it also helps in controlling functions of a computer. Even if the mouse is not working, one can use some basic functions with the help of a keyboard, such as opening, saving or deleting a file or document, alignment of the text, underlining the text in a document, copying and pasting documents, checking grammar and spelling, etc. Each of these functions would require certain specific commands, which can be given to a computer by pressing specific keys in a predetermined order.
Most computers use the QWERTY keyboard, though there is always an option of using the alternative Dvorak keyboard also. One can download free software for changing the functions of a traditional QWERTY keyboard to turn it into a Dvorak keyboard.
Apart from letters and numbers, computer keyboards also have certain signs printed on them. One can even use the same keyboard for feeding inputs in different fonts and languages. This can be done with the help software available online. Most of this software and many of the fonts available in different languages can be downloaded for free.
A standard computer keyboard has to be large enough so that the user can press its keys comfortably. Many users prefer to use wireless keyboards. They provide greater mobility to a user. Some computer keyboards, though not wireless, are detachable and can be used with more than one device. They also provide limited mobility to the user. The keyboards are available in a wide range of prices these days. There are several models of keyboards available in the market; you should select a keyboard which fulfills your requirements.
