Colostrum is the pre milk substance produced in all mammals during the time of childbirth. Colostrum, which has many benefits, has been the subject of research for many years. Over the last two decades alone, more than 2000 research papers have been published hailing the role played by colostrum in curing various diseases.
The benefits of colostrum were first documented in India and reached the western world in 1950s, when a group of scientists depicted the method to isolate the anti-polio substance from cow’s milk. Polio was a major disease in the west at that time making this a major breakthrough. In 1969, a paper published in “Natural History”, revealed that colostrum contains up to 40 times the amount of immunoglobulin G, one of the body’s most effective immune protectors, than human breast milk.
A paper published in1979, was presented at the annual meeting of American Pediatric Society brought about a major revolution in the field of colostrum research in the western world. Here, it was stated that colostrum has the ability to fight a host of diseases. Since then, these findings have been confirmed by various researches all over the world and the popularity of colostrum has grown exponentially.
Later, Dr. G.P. Davidson and co-investigators at the Gastroenterology Unit, Adelaide Medical Centre for Women and Children, South Australia, conducted an experiment to determine the effect of colostrum on children between 3 and 15 years old. It was observed that none of the children, who were given a regular dose of colostrum, were affected by any diseases. On the other hand, many of the children who had not consumed colostrum were affected by rotavirus, the world’s most common pediatric intestinal disease that causes childhood diarrhea.
Since then, researchers all over the world have proved the undeniable benefits of colostrum for children and adults alike. Researches have also proved that all the benefits of colostrum can be had only if it is taken within 12 hours of birth, preferably from the first milking.
