Cellulite is a common skin disorder faced especially by women. In simple terms, cellulite is fat that is deposited in pockets below the surface of the skin. Fat cells swell up and push up against the surrounding fibrous connective tissues, causing a dimpled effect resembling cottage cheese or the surface of an orange peel. Therefore, it is sometimes known as orange peel syndrome or cottage cheese skin.
As beauty conscious men and women struggle to fight acne and wrinkles for a healthy, glowing look, cellulite poses a totally different threat. Cellulite is commonly found on the thighs, stomach and buttocks. This disorder, although primarily found in girls and women, is also known to affect men.
Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not always caused by obesity. While obesity is related to being overweight, cellulite is caused by a hormonal imbalance and hence can also affect a thin person. A weak cell structure is the primary cause of cellulite. This condition occurs when there is an inadequate intake of essential fatty acids. Genetics also plays a major role in the formation of cellulite. Other factors that cause cellulite are poor blood circulation, dehydration, smoking, dietary inadequacies and lack of exercise. Cellulite, unfortunately, tends to lower the self-esteem of the person suffering from it.
The adage “prevention is better than cure” holds true for cellulite too. Proper exercise, a healthy diet devoid of toxins, substantial intake of water and not smoking are some of the steps that can be taken to prevent the occurrence of cellulite.
If one already suffers from cellulite, then a number of cosmetic treatments, lotions and creams are available to help with it. While some provide long lasting effects, others only give a respite from the disorder for a short period. Treatments such as Liposuction and Mesotherapy are expensive and can, at times, worsen the effects of cellulite.
It is essential to research the treatment options available, take sound medical advice and deal with cellulite before it reaches acute stages, in order to maintain a perfect, healthy skin.
