The famous Mexican port city of Cancun consists of two parts: The narrow Cancun Island is surrounded by the Bahai de Mujeres (Bay of Women), the Caribbean Sea , and the Nichupte and Bojorquez lagoons. Its 14-mile long stretch is lined with beautiful sand beaches. Mainland Cancun is a dynamic a commercial hub and houses broad avenues with whitewashed restaurants, hotels and shops. Two bridges connect the island and the mainland.
Though recently, the city and its booming tourism industry were jeopardized by Hurricane Wilma on October 22 , 2005, the city has recovered and people have begun coming back to Cancun. Four million visitors reach the shores of Cancun each year on a staggering average of 190 flights a day to enjoy its beaches and ancient Maya ruins. There are regular bus services to the carefully excavated coastal ruins of Tulum and framed by powder white beaches. A 2-hour tour service costs nearly 60 pesos. The large ruins of Chichen are a bit distant, and one needs to stay in a hotel near the site to see these ruins completely.
The first question that springs in any traveler’s mind would be “Where to stay?” Cancun has several 2 to 5 star hotels. Some hotels offer only accommodation, some offer Bed and Breakfast, while some offer accommodation and food round the clock. Most hotels have beautiful pools and excellent access to the beach. Major hotels include Hilton Cancun Beach and Golf Resort, Hyatt Regency, JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, Le Meridien, Ritz-Carlton and Sheraton Cancun Resort & Towers. Hotel accommodation starts from USD 30 in cheap hotels.
Many travel agents and hotels have their own websites. Online hotel maps, which are hosted in many of these sites, are an easy means to locate hotels in Cancun.
