Health insurance in California is regulated by the California Department of Insurance (DIC). DIC offers many kinds of insurance options to suits all kinds of people, their needs, budgets, health care requirements and lifestyles. In California, health insurance may be categorized as: individual and group insurance.
There are various kinds of California health insurance policies: Indemnity Policies (Traditional Fee-for-Service Insurance), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs or Managed Care), Self-Insured Health Plans (Single Employer Self-Insured Plans) and Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangements (MEWAs). Other special kinds of policies are: Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP), Healthy Families Program, Access for Infants and Mothers Program (AIM), Pacific Health Advantage (PacAdvantage) and other Supplemental Health Insurance Policies that can be taken along with another health insurance policy. These are specially meant for people with low incomes.
The state of California has also passed some laws for making health insurance more affordable and easy to obtain. One such Act is the Cal-COBRA, which relates to extension of current group insurance when there is a qualifying event like termination of employment or reduction of hours from part-time to full-time. The extension period is 36 months. Another act is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Under HIPAA, individuals who have lost their employee sponsored group health insurance plan can purchase health insurance coverage even if they have a preexisting condition.
