Health insurance is a kind of insurance that provides security against medical costs for any illnesses or accidents in the future. The state of California provides many different kinds of health insurance plans and policies for the welfare of the citizens.
California health insurance policies are of many different kinds, depending upon the needs, budgets and medical requirements of the purchasers. California Department of Insurance offers many kinds of policies like: Indemnity Policies (Traditional Fee-for-Service Insurance), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs or Managed Care), Self-Insured Health Plans (Single Employer Self-Insured Plans) and Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangements (MEWAs). There are also special policies like: Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP), Healthy Families Program (HFP), Access for Infants and Mothers Program (AIM), Pacific Health Advantage (PacAdvantage), and other Supplemental Health Insurance Policies.
California health insurance is basically sold in two formats: individual and Group. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages. Individual health insurance is for people who: are not dependents to anyone; are not covered by the employer’s group insurance policies and are not a member of any professional or trade association that provides group coverage. They are mainly for those who are self-employed, contract employees or those who work for small employers (having 2-50 employees).
California individual health insurance can be obtained by submitting an application that contains medical history, and other details. This application can be obtained from a certified insurance agent. A medical underwriter at the insurance company would review the application and determine if the applicant is eligible for the policy. The insurance company will not cover any preexisting conditions for up to 1 year after the effective date of the policy. However, the applicant is eligible for prior creditable coverage towards any waiting period for preexisting conditions he/she has been under an individual or group insurance previously without a break of coverage of more than 62 days.
Nowadays, many insurance companies are offering different kinds of attractive individual health insurance polices that are suitable for people who are not covered under group health insurance. Information about these policies can be sourced through the Internet.
