Burlington is located on the east shore of Lake Champlain. It lies between the Adirondack and Green Mountains and is the biggest city in Vermont. Its population is approximately 45,000, and it is a bustling city that fairly bursts with color during fall.
One of the most enjoyable towns to live in or to visit in New England, Burlington is located near Montreal, Canada, and thus takes on a charming, unusual Canadian flavor. However, one of the top twenty-five universities in America, the University of Vermont, provides it with a strong college atmosphere. This hip, relaxed fusion, with Boston about two hundred miles southeast and Montreal eighty miles to the north, lends the city a unique feel.
The Lake Champlain area provides a spectacular backdrop for either work or relaxation, or both. You can procure information on events, activities, business, travel, and tourism from the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Burlington has looked towards Canada as much as towards the south from its earliest days. The St. Lawrence River provided shipping connections that were many times easier than the land routes across mountains. Therefore, the harbor was transformed into a major supply center.
The founders of the city were Ethan Allen and his family. Allen was a wealthy landowner; his brother Ira established the now thriving University of Vermont.
Regarding politics, the former “socialist” mayor of Burlington, Bernard Saunders, was elected, in 1990, to the House of Representatives from Vermont, becoming the first political independent to go to Congress in forty years.
A university town that is youthful, vibrant, and outward looking, Burlington is one of the rare cities in America to offer something that is very much like a café culture. You can stroll around on foot downtown, and walking spaces and parks are favored over mass housing developments. The Church Street Marketplace and several open-air terraces offer plenty of space for pedestrians and strollers alike.
