A medal is an item of honor given by a government authority for extraordinary services rendered for the country, especially as in military services. The word medal is restricted to a piece of metal that is coin like in shape. However, it has a deeper significance attached to it. A medal is awarded with reference to an Order or decoration a person receives for a task of valor. Medals of Great Britain have been significant in History. They have represented the high value of a British military service members the world over. British medals are significant mainly for the reasons they have been awarded and the importance of the medals.
Victoria Cross medal was established in 1856, during the Crimean War. This is an extremely valued medal. A British army serviceman was awarded this medal for carrying out a single act of courage and bravery for the country during a battle. Victoria Cross medals were made from bronze salvaged from cannons captured in the Crimean War.
Military Medal was created to acknowledge the courage of junior officers in the battlefield. This medal was awarded for ‘gallantry in the field,’ to officers above the rank of a captain. A silver bar on the ribbon of the medal represented additional awards received by the servicemen. The Distinguished Service Order medal dates back to 1886, during the reign of Queen Victoria. This medal is usually not given to officers under the rank of a Captain. In terms of bravery awards, DSO ranks lower than the Victoria Cross. It is awarded for bravery in action. There were 8,981 awards given to First World War soldiers and veterans.
Other important British medals include the Distinguished Service Cross medal, Distinguished Flying Medal, Air Force Cross, 1914 Star, The Mercantile Marine Medal, and Inter-Allied Victory Medal of 1919. British army men were highly revered and hence received great accolades for any heroism exhibited in the combat zone.
