The word “bridal” came into existence during medieval times, when wedding parties were called “Bride-al’s.” Marriage is a significant event in most people’s lives. It is a commitment that is joyous and is celebrated all over the world. The most logical explanation to the practice of wearing a bridal dress is to mark the importance of the event.
A marriage is a joyous occasion in every woman’s life and wearing a special one-time dress distinguishes the occasion from other events in her life. Bridal dresses bear testimony to love, the festivity of life and the concept of holy matrimony. Wedding gowns all over the world vary in color and fashion, depending upon the religion and the culture of the bride. However, the sentiment behind wearing this special garment is always the same.
The practice of wearing a white bridal dress is believed to have started with the marriage of Queen Victoria in 1840. This royal wedding is believed to have influenced the selection of white as the traditional color of a Christian wedding dress. Bridal stores offer a wide range of wedding dresses, in various styles, sizes and prices.
Wedding garments are also available in lighter shades such as pink, yellow and blue. White dresses include various “shades,” such as ecru, ivory, diamond white and candlelight. The most popular design is the long flowing dress. However, many brides today prefer to wear a shorter bridal dress. Brides may also choose to wear bridal trains, which are a long stretch of cloth that trails on the ground or is carried by flower girls and bridesmaids.
After an outfit for a wedding is selected, it may need alterations. It is advisable to order a bridal dress well in advance. Selection of designs is usually dependant upon the personal taste of the bride. Traditional practices, place, season and the time of the day that the marriage is scheduled for, also influence the choice of a wedding gown. Depending upon these aspects, a bridal dress maybe formal, semi-formal or informal.
