As with the other aspects in the book binding industry, book binding tape industry has advanced technologically. The tape being used these days is tough, sticky, and versatile. It can be used to attach multiple photos, frame edges, or bind mini books.
Book binding tape is archival safe and is available in a wide variety of colors. The tape is usually available in 1.5” width for binding mini books and in a wider variety of widths for industrial purposes. Another kind that is very popular is the double stitched binder tape. This tape is generally used during book reassembling and covering the book with a new bone folder.
The book binding tape used in the binding industry is available in low gloss finish or non-reflective, poly-coated matte finish. Natural rubber adhesive is the most commonly used gaffers tape in the industry.
Book binding tapes are usually cloth tapes that conform well to irregular surfaces and remove cleanly and leave no residue on most surfaces. Book binding tape can be easily torn by hand and has excellent water vapor and abrasion resistance. It can be used for sealing, holding, and repairing books. Riverside’s low gloss book binding tape is the most popular choice for reinforcing book covers and bindings.
Good quality book binding tapes can be used to reinforce book spines, paperbacks, and magazines. They are usually extremely transparent and flexible and are excellent for book repair uses. Book repairing tapes usually do not discolor, crack, or peel.
Most of the time the binding tape can be used for angular taping at the end of the book jacket or edge taping on the inside of the cover.
