Pediatric dentists handle dental problems in infants through the teenage years. They undergo two years of additional training to treat the dental problems of children and are constantly updating their education to keep current with the latest treatments for young people.
One important aspect of pediatric dentistry is that children need to be able to understand what is happening to them. Pediatric dentists are trained in behavior modification and communication skills that that they can gain a positive relationship with your child and treat any dental problems that may arise. Pediatric dentists follow your child from infancy through adolescence and can recognize certain conditions simply because they know your child’s dental history. They will monitor the dental health of your child by providing regular visits and encourage prevention and treatment from day one.
The atmosphere is important in a pediatric dental office. Therefore, care is given in a friendly, fun office environment hopefully removing most stress that a child might be experiencing. Treatments include gum and teeth check up, advice on preventive care (cleaning of teeth and gums and fluoride treatments), advice on nutrition and diet and counseling to parents on problems like a child sucking his thumb. More extensive treatment includes cavity filling, dental implants and braces. Early dental care trains the child to keep gums and teeth clean in hopes that the child will develop health dental habits and carry them through adulthood.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry a child should have his or her first dental check up at one year old. For more information go to www.dentalfind.com. You will find a listing of pediatric dentists in Austin.
