Antique Lighting

Antique lighting gives an old world charm, rustic and calm feeling. Antique lighting fixtures can be given a new appearance by remodeling them to give a candle-effect. This may be achieved by using bulbs that appear to flicker like original candles. This may eliminate the problem of lighting many candles and replacing them regularly. At the same time, it lends a warm and radiant feel to the room.

Many lamps, like lava lamps of the 50s and 60s or animated action lamps of the 20s, have been widely used for decoration. Motion lamps, such as animated lamps of the 1920s, exhibited popular themes like water cascading over Niagara Falls, or fire around a log. Advertisers reintroduced motion lamps in 1950s. These moving lamps had contemporary themes showing swimwear models; popular snacks and drinks such as popcorn and Coke were used by food joints too. Lava lamps were also famous, with colorful lighting and motion and their popularity has not diminished yet. Static yet colorful, stained glass lighting is very pleasant to look at. Louis Comfort Tiffany brought in this type of stained glass lamps more than 100 years ago. These fixtures may include floor lamps, ceiling fixtures, and table lamps, in Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mission, and Victorian styles.

It is important to decide upon the time period before choosing an antique fixture. They should preferably be of the same age or newer than the dxe9cor of the home. It is beneficial to use more lights at lower wattage. It should be kept in mind that the lower a fixture is hung, the larger it will appear. Equipment should be sized to the dining table and not to a room in case of hanging lights. It is advisable to avoid trying to light a large room with a single high wattage bulb as it ruins a period look. It is better to use secondary lighting, such as sconces or choose a ceiling fixture with multiple arms.

The Internet is one of the best options for finding antique lighting fixtures apart from stores.
