Rubber stamps are widely used in business houses and government offices. They are used to make impressions on paper or other surfaces using ink. The process of imprinting such characters/figures in ink onto a surface is called ‘rubber stamping.’ The image or characters are usually carved, laser engraved, molded, or vulcanized on a rubber sheet or block. The main part of a rubber stamp is a small flat pad on which the raised characters/figures stand. The handle is fixed on the other side of the pad. The handle is often made of an acrylic block or wood to give it a more solid appearance.
Generally, rubber stamps are primarily meant for imprinting on paper and fabric. There are rubber stamps specially made to print on a number of other mediums such as metal, wood, plastic glass, and even rock.
Decorative rubber stamps, also known as art stamps, are very popular owing to their simplicity of use. They are available in a wide range of intricate designs. Art stamps are widely used for decorating greeting cards and other ornamental papers.
Decorative rubber stamps can be made easily at home. You have to find a pattern first. It can be anything to your liking — a cartoon, a symbol, or your name. The figure must be small enough to fit on the base of the rubber pad. The next step is to draw a black and white image with bold lines. You can use tracing paper and a soft lead pencil to copy the image. Then fill in the black areas darkly, leaving a heavy coat of pencil lead on the paper. Now you can easily carve the unwanted areas out using a white vinyl eraser, green rubber eraser, or hard red rubber eraser. Special carving blocks are available with craft suppliers for making bigger stamps.
