Abusive relationships can be referred to as interpersonal relationships characterized by the threat of physical or psychological abuse. This kind of relationship attains epidemic proportions and tends to worsen over time. It is a common fact that there is an imbalance of power in abusive relationships.
Abuse can be of any type. It can be physical violence or on emotional and verbal levels. Some of the physical abuses that occur in romances and friendships are hitting, slapping, and kicking. Teasing, bullying, betrayal, threats, and humiliating others form major emotional abuses. Emotional abuses are even more harmful than physical abuses as they can cause long term self esteem issues. Other common factors of abusive relationships are jealousy, lack of intimacy, sexual coercion, broken promises and power play.
Some of the abusive behaviors include physical harm, frequent humiliation and constant anger. Abusive relationships change only with sustained therapy. It needs mutual understanding, honesty, openness and willingness from both the parties to work on these issues. One of the recommended remedies for abusive relationships is group therapy. It helps people to get out of the denial that becomes a part of the abusive pattern. Certain personality traits predispose many people to abusive relationships.
A lot of resources are available to improve abusive relationships. There are some positive steps to cope with an abusive relationship. The first is to maintain links outside the relationship to avoid isolation. Next, it is important to get as much information about the resources available. Self help books about healthy and unhealthy relationships are a relief. It is advisable to seek professional counseling whenever necessary. You must try to develop a support system so that you will not be alone in case you choose to leave the relationship.
To prevent yourself from getting into an abusive relationship, you should make sure of certain things. Firstly, it is vital to ensure that your partner does not emotionally abuse you. Secondly, it is recommended that you check whether your partner is not treating you as an equal. You should ideally avoid those partners who always try to control every move and blame you as the person responsible for every bad situation.
