Abortion Clinics

Abortion clinics perform surgical abortions. Surgical abortions are over in a few minutes. There are various methods for performing clinical abortions. In the first fifteen weeks, suction-aspiration or vacuum abortions are the most common methods, in place of the more risky dilation and curettage (D & C). In “manual vacuum aspiration,” or MVA abortion, the fetus or embryo is removed by suction using a manual syringe. In the “electric vacuum aspiration,” or EVA abortion method, suction produced by an electric pump is used to remove the fetus or embryo. From the fifteenth week up until around the eighteenth week, a surgical dilation and evacuation (D & E) is used. In this case, the cervix of the uterus is opened and emptied using surgical instruments and suction.

The method of emptying the uterus by suction using a different apparatus is termed as “dilation and suction curettage” (D & C). It is a standard gynecological procedure performed for a variety of reasons, including examination. The cleaning of the walls of the uterus with a curette is termed as curettage. With the growth of the fetus, abortion is induced in the third trimester using alternate techniques. For surgical abortion, a pregnancy less than six weeks along may increase the chance of failed abortion. The first trimester lasts through twelve weeks. A surgical abortion normally takes a three- to four-hour visit to the clinic. The abortion procedure takes three to five minutes, and the follow-up visit to the clinic is required in three to four weeks.

The cost of surgical abortion varies from $450 to $1,275 (up to twelve weeks), on a sliding fee scale. For the last twenty-five years, surgical abortion has been formally studied by doctors and students. Over 99% of surgical abortions are successful. Less than 1% of the time, the procedure fails and needs to be repeated. Moreover, the childbearing ability is not affected, barring rare and serious complications.
