Named for its 45 mile long lake on the Colorado River, Lake Havasu City has grown into a popular site for those traveling West. Of course, the first step to visiting this desert city is getting there. While a road trip is always one option, many tourists instead opt to travel by plane, train, or bus. The Lake Havasu City Municipal Airport offers flights on America West Airlines (also known as Mesa Air) and Sun Western Airlines via Phoenix and Las Vegas, respectively.
Once in town, visitors will notice that there are only a few main streets in the city. Nevertheless, drivers may want to pick up a free map at the Visitor Information Center in the English Village off of Mesquite Avenue.
With their luggage picked up and a map in their hand, what is a Lake Havasu City tourist to do? The most popular tourist attractions include the Colorado River, the Mohave Desert, the Sonoran Desert, and – of course- the London Bridge.
The London Bridge crosses the Bridgewater Channel from the mainland to a small island on the Colorado River. When the bridge began to sink into the River Thames in its hometown, Robert P. McCulloch decided to dismantle it and rebuild it in Lake Havasu. The bridge became world famous and put the town on the map.
The bridge cultivated London flair, as businesses came together in the English Village, located beneath the bridge. British-style shopping and dining creates an authentic English atmosphere.
With a famous bridge, beautiful scenery, great shopping and dining, and perfect desert weather, Lake Havasu City has become a popular vacation sport for every type of tourist.
